Burford Cotswold Tour

Drive down Burford High Street and you will see beautiful views over to the Cotswold Countryside. At the bottom of the Hill the 3 arched medieval bridge crosses the River Windrush.

Burford, its name derived from a Fortified Anglo Saxon Ford, became an important crossroads and a very wealthy wool town. Many styles and ages of Architecture line the main street down to the river. The magnificent Church of St John Baptist, a 15th century parish Church used to have 7 chapels with 5 incumbent Priests, became a large Wool Church. It was here that William Morris caught one of the priests removing a silver goblet from the Church. As a result, he started the Society of Preservation of Ancient Monuments.
